That’s not bad fuel efficiency, mind you, and if you’ve got predominantly short-hop use in mind, it won’t be a lot worse than you’d get from a like-for-like diesel anyway. It would probably average something between 35mpg and 40mpg in mixed short- and long-range use. Even with the new cylinder shutdown system, this car returns only 45mpg on a typical motorway cruise. Likewise, if you bank on beating 50mpg to make your monthly fuel bills add up, it won’t work for you, either. If you like your SUVs torquey and effortless, this probably isn’t the car for you. That’s particularly true if you go for the petrol version, which revs pretty sweetly and needs to be worked fairly hard to make the car accelerate with much urgency and which, thankfully, has the slick, precise control weights and crisp handling responses to reward the investment of effort. It's not the most easy-to-drive car of its breed, sure rather, the sort of SUV you might pick having only reluctantly admitted that you could do with the space and versatility such a car affords, while also being not ready to give up being an interested and involved driver just yet. The Signature might offer near-premium levels of luxury, but for the discerning buyer, there's no need to opt for the Rosewood detailing and Nappa leather upholstery. The CX-5 remains a likeable sugared pill of a compact SUV. Adding the package gets a bunch of meaningful premium features while leaving money over to spend on a family getaway. However, we would opt for the middle ground here and go for the Touring trim plus the Touring Premium Package that adds LED foglights, the power-sliding moonroof, front and rear parking sensors, the Bose surround sound system, and extra USB ports. Looking at the Grand Touring trim level, the luxury-level extras like 20-inch wheels, a moonroof, a seven-inch driver information display, a Bose sound system, and hands-free tailgate operability make sense for those that are going to spend a lot of time in the vehicle. With the lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the bump up to a larger screen, leather trim, power-adjustable passenger seat, and power liftgate, we would opt to skip the Sport trim and step straight into the Touring model at the very least.
